Matrix Signs Integration

One of the standout features of MTM-TRAJECTCONTROLE is its real-time synchronization with overhead highway matrix signs (MTM-MATRIXBORDEN and MTM-MATRIXDEV). In real-world highways, electronic signs constantly change speed limits due to traffic congestion, rain, accidents, or roadworks.

MTM-TRAJECTCONTROLE eliminates static, outdated speed cameras by dynamically adapting the legal speed limit to whatever is currently displayed above the road.

When dynamic synchronization is enabled (Config.SyncWithMatrix = true), the system connects to the active matrix resource automatically upon startup.

[Highway Approach] --> [Gantry 1: 100 km/h] --> [Gantry 2: 70 km/h] --> [Gantry 3: OFF (130)] --> [Exit Portal]
|------ 600m ------| |------ 500m -----| |------ 800m ------|
  1. Entry Speed Detection: When a vehicle passes the entry line, the system checks the matrix sign directly above or just upstream from the entry gate.
  2. Intermediate Sub-Segments: As the vehicle travels through the corridor, each intermediate gantry governs the speed for that specific stretch of highway until the next gantry.
  3. Automatic Travel Time Calculation: The system determines the minimum legal time required to traverse each highway sub-segment safely according to the posted speeds.
  4. Effective Legal Limit: The overall effective speed limit for the entire trip is calculated from these combined segments, producing a fair and legally sound enforcement threshold.

1. Speed Reductions (Traffic Jams & Accidents)

Section titled “1. Speed Reductions (Traffic Jams & Accidents)”

If a dispatcher or police officer lowers a highway gantry from 100 to 70 or 50 km/h using the matrix tablet or web control center:

  • The speed check immediately factors in the lower speed for that section of road.
  • Passing vehicles are expected to slow down in accordance with the electronic signs.

2. Dark / Blank Matrix Signs (End of Restriction)

Section titled “2. Dark / Blank Matrix Signs (End of Restriction)”

In European and Dutch traffic law, an electronic matrix speed limit is valid only until the next gantry. If the next gantry is turned OFF (dark/blank):

  • The electronic speed restriction has ended.
  • The highway immediately reverts to the section’s configured Default Speed Limit (e.g. 100 or 130 km/h).
  • The system automatically treats inactive gantries as a return to standard highway limits, ensuring drivers are never unfairly cited for driving the standard statutory speed.

A common issue in primitive speed camera scripts is checking the speed of the matrix sign on the exit gate:

  • A matrix sign on the exit portal applies to the road ahead, not the road the driver just completed.
  • MTM-TRAJECTCONTROLE strictly excludes any matrix signs located within 15 meters of or beyond the exit gate.
  • If the exit gantry is set to 50 km/h due to an incident further down the road, drivers who just finished a 100 km/h section are not penalized.

2. Upstream Lookback for Mid-Gantry Entry Gates

Section titled “2. Upstream Lookback for Mid-Gantry Entry Gates”

If you place an entry gate in the middle of a highway stretch (between two matrix gantries), there may not be a physical gantry directly on the entry line:

  • The system automatically performs an Upstream Lookback (Config.MatrixUpstreamLookback = 350.0m).
  • It looks back along the highway in the direction traffic arrived from, finds the preceding active gantry, and applies its speed to the beginning of the section.

Matrix synchronization can be toggled on or off for individual corridors:

  • Enabled: Adapts dynamically to overhead matrix signs.
  • Disabled: Operates purely on the section’s static statutory speed limit, ignoring any nearby matrix signs.
  • This toggle can be adjusted during creation or modified at any time in the /trajectmap tablet.

MTM-TRAJECTCONTROLE recognizes all standard speed displays supported by MTM-MATRIXBORDEN:
